Evaluation Strategies
reflexive
Design assignments and activities to incorporate elements of self-reflection and self/peer assessments
just as self-reflexivity is an important competency to develop, self-evaluation is an important way to assess learning. Self-assessment helps establish trusting relationships between students and teachers and allows students to take ownership over their learning. Teachers can use reflexive assessment by:
- Allowing a portion of students grades to be self-assessed
- Include peer-assessment
- Design assignments and activities to incorporate elements of self-reflection as the final task to complete before submitting
Person-Centered
Focus on formative instead of summative assessment and encourage students to create honest learning goals for themselves
person-centered assessment’s primary goal is to ensure that the assessment itself aids the person in learning and is not necessarily an evaluation of what has or hasn’t been learned. Teachers can:
- Focus on assessment as learning (formative) instead of assessment of learning (summative)
- Encourage students to create personalized, honest learning goals for themselves. Include regular check ins with these learning goals as part of weekly reflection activities
Choice and
Flexibility
Provide students with a variety of options for how they demonstrate their learning, reflection and growth as a learner
just as flexibility with content allows for students to have more agency and autonomy over their learning, providing options in assessment styles allows students to demonstrate their learning in ways that best suits them as individuals. Providing a degree of choice enables students to demonstrate their understanding of content using whichever competency they feel strong in, or vice versa.
