Sources of Knowledge
Introducing content that reflects the diversity of Canada by engaging with knowledge from Indigenous ways of knowing and incorporating embodied physical learning in addition to cognitive learning
aligning with the foundational values of equity and justice, as well as the focus on diverse perspectives, it is important for teachers to introduce content that reflects the diversity of Canada. This means engaging with knowledge from Indigenous ways of knowing, and other non-Western sources of knowledge. In the context of CKP, Indigenous peoples have been stewards of responsible relations with the natural world since time immemorial, and their science should be consensually included in course content. Teachers can ensure they are including non-Western sources of knowledge by:
- Engaging with local Indigenous elders
- Incorporating embodied, physical learning in addition to cognitive, physical learning
Variety of formats and multiple mediums utilized
Providing students with multiple options for how they demonstrate their understanding using various technologies and platforms and providing content and medium menus to choose from
students of the 21st century are likely digital natives and will have competencies in various technologies and mediums. This should be encouraged and celebrated by allowing students to engage with a variety of software’s, programs and applications. Additionally, analog mediums should be introduced as well to ensure that students have a well-rounded, complete pool of information. When possible, students should be given autonomy to explore what mediums work best for them in regard to gathering, analyzing and presenting information.
- Allow students to present information using new and old technologies and platforms, such as TikTok’s and other social medias, movies, art, graphic design, and music
- In addition to providing content menus, think about how you can incorporate “medium menus” in your teaching
- Always provide students with multiple options for how they demonstrate their understanding
